Breast implant breaking news

This week the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) suspended eight major breast implants on the Australian market. It has taken this step after completion of a review looking into several types of highly-textured implants linked to anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL).

The Lymphoma develops when bacteria gets trapped in the grooves of the implant’s surface, leading to an infection that triggers an immune system response.

It is a global issue, with various brands of highly-textured implants already banned or suspended in Canada, France and the Netherlands.

Patients who have breast implants, or have previously had breast implants should regularly check their breasts and see their doctor if they notice any changes or have any concerns.

Perth Radiological Clinic specialises in breast imaging.
