What to know

An x-ray image, or radiograph, is produced when a very small amount of ionising radiation passes through the body and strikes a sensitive detector placed on the other side of the body. X-ray imaging can be used to assess various body parts, commonly bones, joints, the lungs and the abdomen.

You suspect or know that you may be pregnant

Do you require an interpreter?
Is the patient non-english speaking? If so, we can arrange for an interpreter to be present during the appointment. Please let us know as soon as possible so we can make the relevant arrangements.

There is no special preparation required for most x-rays
Upon arrival to your appointment, you may be asked by the radiographer to change into a gown before your procedure
You may also be asked to remove jewellery, eyeglasses, and any metal objects that may obscure the images
You will be exposed to a very small amount of radiation when you receive an x-ray
At Perth Radiological Clinic, we use advanced digital x-ray equipment to ensure you are exposed to the minimum amount of radiation needed to obtain adequate images
If you are pregnant or suspect that you may be, you should tell our doctor or radiographer before the test is performed, as special precautions may have to be taken
While an appointment isn’t necessary, our clinics sometimes experience a busy period, so if there is a specific date or time you prefer, please make an appointment here.

On arrival, you will be taken to a changing room to change into a gown if required
The technician will explain the procedure to you
Depending on the body part being x-rayed, you may be required to sit, stand or lie down
You may also be required to follow some breathing instructions
Each image will take around 20 seconds to complete, once positioned
The images will be sent through to our specialist radiologists to review and report.
